Did you know? Sea buckthorn is magical
Folks in the northern regions of the earth get to enjoy fresh berries of all sorts, many of them growing wild in nature in abundance. One of these berry privileges is the more rare sea buckthorn. Sea buckthorn by itself in its fresh, natural state tastes incredibly tart, it’s absolutely nothing like sweet strawberries and blueberries when it comes to flavor. However, this tiny orange berry is insanely powerful in the health department. According to the Finnish medical publication Duodecim, sea buckthorn lowered LDL-cholesterol (the bad kind) and increased HDL-cholesterol (the good kind) in subjects in one study. Several studies exist that see promise in sea buckthorn’s possible ability to also lower blood pressure and blood sugar, treat stomach ulcers and skin diseases, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory diseases, thrombosis and cancer.
What we do know about sea buckthorn is that it is one of the most densely nutrition packed fruit on the planet, composed of antioxidants, vitamins, flavonoids, polyphenols and polysaccharides. More precisely sea buckthorn has an incredibly high vitamin C content, but also includes vitamins A, E, B1, B2, and B6 as well as potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus.
Although this plant in native only to northern regions of the world, it’s easy to get your hands on sea buckthorn oils, powders, jams, and juice concentrates. And hey, you never know, it might be your new powerful secret ingredient to toss in a smoothie or on top of a chia bowl.
